Ep 63: The Momentum Mistake That Keeps You Stuck

Welcome back to episode #63 of The 30-Day Year Podcast, where Dave and Jacq Conway discuss the importance of building momentum in your business and life, and about “the momentum mistake that keeps you stuck.”

Dave says you can't build momentum tomorrow. You must start today. He also explains that procrastination and indecision are momentum's greatest enemies, and introduces the concept of working in sprints (90-day, 21-day, or even daily) to stay focused and build compounding results.

He also shares lessons from McDonald's and its perpetual marketing campaigns, and says that successful individuals are similar and are always running some kind of focused push.

He also stresses the importance of reducing "friction" and improving your mental stamina, so you can move faster and generate more momentum, much like a frictionless magnet train.

Then Dave and Jacq discuss how to sustain momentum without burning out. This episode is jam-packed with golden nuggets of wisdom, insights, and practical steps you can take now.

Inside this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why momentum can only be built in the present moment…

  • How procrastination often disguises itself as “preparation”...

  • Why 90-day and 21-day sprints create faster results…

  • The key difference between motivation and true momentum…

  • How to reduce mental friction so you can move even faster…

  • How to increase your “mental stamina”...

  • Why Dave says consistency is actually momentum…

  • How to sustain growth without burning out…

  • And much more!

Key Takeaways

Momentum Can Only Be Built Right Now (0:01:57)

Dave explains that momentum can only be created in the present moment. In fact, he points out that the root word of momentum is moment.

He says that successful people stop waiting for perfect conditions and start moving now.

Because motion, actual movement, creates momentum.

He goes deeper in this episode.

2.) Dave’s #1 Secret For Building Momentum (0:03:33)

One of the core frameworks and secrets Dave shares in this episode is the idea of working in “sprints.” Instead of operating with vague yearly goals, he prefers focused periods of intensity. He goes into more detail about these sprints in the episode.

Dave and Jacq also discuss how massive companies like McDonald’s are constantly creating momentum through focused campaigns, such as:

  • Monopoly promotions

  • Dollar Drink Days

  • movie tie-ins

  • seasonal pushes

There is a lot to learn here. They never stop building excitement or momentum. Dave says that successful people should think the same way.

Instead of drifting through the year, create intentional bursts of focus and energy instead.

3.) How Procrastination Often Disguises Itself (0:08:36)

Procrastination is dangerous. It doesn’t just delay results. It destroys momentum before it ever starts. Dave warns that procrastination often disguises itself as endless preparation:

  • researching

  • organizing

  • tweaking

  • waiting

  • “getting ready”

But underneath all of it is fear and indecision.

Don’t mistake preparation for progress. Get into action and build momentum now!

4.) Friction Is Slowing You Down More Than You Think (0:15:03)

Dave explains that you can probably move much faster than you are right now. You’re just carrying too much internal friction. The less friction you have, the faster you can move.

What does friction look like?

  • limiting beliefs

  • fear

  • unhealthy habits

  • weak mental stamina

  • self-doubt

  • emotional resistance

Reduce the friction and watch your momentum naturally increase.

Tune into the episode to find out how!

5.) Mental Stamina Is The Missing Ingredient (0:18:20)

You’ll definitely want to tune in to hear Dave’s story from his early coaching career, working with Bob Proctor.

At one point, Dave manifested exactly what he wanted: 40 sales calls per week. But after the first week, he felt exhausted and overwhelmed. His instinct was to reduce the workload, but Bob Proctor told him:

“You’re just mentally weak. Your mental stamina needs to go up.”

That’s when Dave realized the real issue was his mental capacity, not the workload. Over time, he adapted, and what once felt overwhelming became normal.

The lesson here is that sometimes growth feels uncomfortable because you’re stretching into a bigger version of yourself.

The answer isn’t always to slow down. You may just need to develop more stamina.

Tune in to find out how!

6.) Consistency Is Momentum (0:23:48)

Dave says, “Consistency is momentum.”

And momentum is usually built through repeated, consistent daily actions:

  • One sale a day…

  • One workout a day…

  • One difficult conversation…

  • One meaningful habit repeated consistently daily…

Jacq explains, she’s constantly competing with herself, always trying to improve the next launch, the next campaign, the next project. Not through perfection, but through momentum.

Imagine if your best month ever now becomes your new baseline. That’s constant and never-ending improvement through momentum.

That being said, rather than sprinting until you burn out, you want sustainable momentum…

7.) Momentum Without Burnout (0:30:28)

Dave and Jacq both agree that rest is essential. After all, you don’t want to burn out, do you?

They recommend that rest should be integrated into your daily structure, not saved until you completely collapse from exhaustion.

Dave and Jacq then share the 6 specific things they do to build recovery directly into their lifestyle, and you can too. Tune in now!

What to Do Next…

Why do some people stay emotionally activated and driven for months… while others lose momentum within days?

According to Dave and Jacq, the answer often has less to do with discipline… and more to do with the way the goal itself is designed.

Most people set goals that are:

  • too vague

  • emotionally flat

  • disconnected from desire

  • or so far away that the brain never fully locks onto them

And when that happens, momentum dies.

That’s why Dave and Jacq created the 30-Day Year Goal Setting Guide.
