Ep 69: The Law of Compensation: How to Take Control of Your Income

Did you know there is a law governing your income right now?  A law as absolute and unbreakable as gravity. And whether you know it by name or not, it has been operating in the background of every paycheck, every raise, every contract, and every business deal you have ever been a part of.

It was written about by Ralph Waldo Emerson way back in 1841. But make no mistake, this law was not “invented” in 1841. It has been woven into the fabric of nature, Biblical scripture, and human experience since the beginning of time. Emerson just gave us the language for it.

Welcome back to episode #69 of The 30-Day Year Podcast, where Dave and Jacq Conway take a deep dive into the Law of Compensation. Tracing it all the way back to its roots, unpacking the three forces that determine how much you earn, and revealing why most people are unknowingly working against it every single day.

If you have ever wondered why some people seem to multiply their income almost effortlessly while others grind away year after year without gaining any ground... this episode has the answers you’ve been looking for!

In this episode, you will discover:

  • The three forces that determine exactly what you earn (and why you only need to master ONE of them…)

  • Why "charge what you're worth" is incomplete advice, and what to focus on instead…

  • Dave's principle "order gets orders" and how to apply it immediately in your business…

  • The hidden self-worth ceiling that stops even world-class performers from receiving what they've already earned…

  • Why you don't get paid FROM people, you get paid THROUGH them (this one will change how you think about business forever!)

  • The concept of “uncomfortable generosity” and why releasing at the level you want to receive is the real key to multiplying your income…

And much more!

Whether you're an entrepreneur, a coach, a salesperson, or someone who simply wants to earn more and understand why your results have felt stuck, this conversation is for you.

The Law of Compensation is always running.

The only question is whether it's running for you or against you.

Key Takeaways

1.) The Law Has Always Been There… Emerson Just Named It (1:38)

Long before self-help books, productivity gurus, or social media coaches, this law was already at work. In 1841, Ralph Waldo Emerson published an essay simply called Compensation. In it, he explored how the universe operates in a kind of perfect mathematical balance: reciprocity, cause and effect, and the constant circulation of energy.

But Dave is quick to point out that Emerson did not create this law of course. You can trace the same principles through the Bible, through Newton, through the observations of nature itself. Emerson simply gave the modern world a framework for understanding what was already there.

Napoleon Hill read that essay for ten years. Earl Nightingale built upon it. Bob Proctor taught it for decades. Dave and Jacq Conway have been living it.

The lineage is long. And the law is real.

2.) Compensation Is Mathematics (4:19)

Most people think of compensation in simple terms. You work an hour, you get paid for an hour. You give a dollar, you get a dollar back.

Dave says that misses the entire point.

At the root of the Law of Compensation is something called the law of increasing returns. Which is simply compounding. When you put a seed in the ground, you do not get one seed back. You get dozens. When a bank lends a dollar, it does not simply want its dollar returned… it wants growth on that dollar, because inflation, time, and risk all demand it.

Compensation demands growth. It is not one plus one. It is mathematics. It’s compounding. It’s multiplication.

And here is the surprising thing that most people never think about: compounding works in both directions. Debt is the law of compensation running in reverse. Inflation is quietly siphoning off the value of every hour you trade for money. If you do not understand how this law operates, it will work against you whether you realize it or not.

3.) The Three Forces… And the One You Actually Control (11:50)

Earl Nightingale distilled the Law of Compensation into three elements:

The need for what you do. Your ability to do it. The difficulty there is in replacing you.

Dave walks you through each one, and then reveals something game-changing:

You only have to focus on one of the three.

The need is already there. Every market has disorder. Every client has a problem they want solved. You did not create that. You just have to find it.

The difficulty in replacing you? That takes care of itself automatically if you master the second element.

The one you actually control is your ability to create order where there is disorder. Get world-class at solving the problem your market is suffering from, and the compensation will come! The law guarantees it.

"Order gets orders." Simple. Unbreakable. And entirely in your control.

Tune in to the full episode to hear Dave go deep on exactly how to develop that ability, and why it is the only thing you truly need to focus on!

4.) You Don't Get Paid From People… You Get Paid Through Them (27:48)

Dave explains that every human being is a distribution channel for an infinite supply of energy. When you serve someone, it looks like you are serving that one person. But what you are really doing is serving the energy that flows through them.

That shift in perspective changes everything about how you do business.

It means you stop keeping score with individuals. You stop tallying who owes you what. You give your absolute best to every single person, every single time, not because you expect that specific person to compensate you directly, but because you know the law will return it to you through whatever channel is available.

Dave calls this a refined attitude of mind. It requires a kind of faith. But it is faith with understanding. Because the mathematics of the cosmos always balances.

There is also a flip side to this that Dave says very few people talk about.

You can be an incredible giver, but if your receiving dial is broken, the compensation cannot flow in.

Tune in to find out what that looks like…and how to fix it.

5.) Uncomfortable Generosity: Release at the Level You Want to Receive (34:33)

Dave and Jacq dig into one of Conway Mentorship's core values in this section, and it is not just about being a nice person.

Generosity is being good. Uncomfortable generosity is something different entirely. It is giving beyond what feels natural, beyond what you are programmed to give, to a point that actually challenges your paradigm.

Dave uses a brilliant analogy here. If you are used to hosting five people for dinner and you suddenly decide to host a hundred, everything changes. The beer order, the steaks, the systems, the budget, the logistics. It creates real anxiety. And that anxiety is the signal that growth is happening.

Because if you stay comfortable hosting five, you will only ever be compensated for five.

You must release at the level you desire to receive. And most people never do, because the stretch required is genuinely terrifying.

Tune in to hear why Dave believes this is one of the most overlooked secrets to multiplying your income!

6.) Build the Person Who Builds the Business (42:04)

Dave closes with this:

The purpose of a business is not to get. It is to serve. It is to create order in another human being's life. Once you master that, compensation flows automatically… as long as you are comfortable receiving it.

But before you can create order for others, you must create order in your own mind first.

That is the starting point. Not a new marketing strategy. Not better pricing. Not more followers.

Get order in your own mind first. Then get crystal clear on how you can create better order in your client's life.

Two simple things. That is it.

If you’re ready to begin, Dave and Jacq's free 30-Day Year Goal-Setting Guide is the first step toward building that internal order. Knowing what you want, getting it on paper, and aligning yourself to your vision is where this whole process starts.

What to Do Next…

The Law of Compensation is not a trend. It is not a framework someone invented in a business school. It is a timeless, unbreakable law that has been governing human results since the beginning of time.

And the most important thing Dave and Jacq want you to walk away with after listening to this episode is this: your income is not determined by luck, hustle, or how loudly you declare your worth. It is determined by how deeply you serve, how masterfully you create order, and how willing you are to grow into the person your goals require.

The law is always running. The only question is whether it is running for you or against you.
